A4Tech PK35N is a small and practical webcam. Most people say it’s old and, as such, it lacks performance. I disagree, as it does what it’s supposed to do. The one that I have is fully functional and I see no reason why I should dump a fully functional device and get a new one due to driver issues, especially since I’ve only used it about a dozen times.

To keep it short, I managed to get my webcam working with Windows 7 Professional x64 and I strongly believe this will also work for other x64 versions of Windows 7 as well, such as Windows 7 Ultimate x64, possibly even Windows 7 x86 (32 bit versions). The idea is simple. Since A4Tech says that the device does not require a driver, yet Windows x64 does not have the proper driver, I thought I should get a compatible driver to work with this webcam. And yes, it worked, no hassle, no bullshit.

This is what I did:

1. I plugged the webcam into an USB port. Of course, Windows 7 x64 did not have the driver and the status of the device was similar to: I know you have plugged this is, but I don’t have the driver for it. The device showed up in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers > Unspecified. At this point, the device was not functioning.
2. I changed the driver of the device to Microsoft > Imaging Device, or something similar by means of "Let me choose the driver for it". Basically, this doesn’t provide the driver, but brings the device controls in a state where a new compatible driver can be easily loaded.
3. I downloaded the camera-a-driver.zip driver package from DriversCollection (thanks!). The archive seems to be broken, yet I managed to extract its contents to a folder. I went to where I extracted the archive contents and ran the Setup.exe program. This installed a new item in my Start menu under Start > All Programs > A4 TECH PC Camera H.
4. Running AMCAP.exe showed the correct images, namely me.
