The Lesser of Two Evils
I wouldn’t necessarily do this over a comment-quarrel on Facebook, but I think this is important and deserves its own webspace such that the truth wins because truth is all that matters to both of us, the WikiLeaks Party of Australia and myself.
So, to get to the point, yesterday I asked WikiLeaks Party to stop quoting Russia Today, as it not a trustworthy and reliable source on the conflict in Syria (or Ukraine, for that matter).
The result was overwhelmingly biased by decade-long propaganda that I care to dismantle:
- „As opposed to the US mainstream media owned by six corporations? RT at least critiques the war-mongering activities of the US government.” I agree, US mainstream media is, largely, controlled, biased and manipulative. On the other hand, RT critiques US as war-mongering. This is also true. Together, however, they become false because the fact that US media is biased, does not make RT less biased. Also, it was not the US government who sold weapons to a civilian-killing government. Furthermore, since Syria host the only Mediterranean Sea Russian Base, Russia would do anything to keep it, including providing weapons to a government. Even more(!), the religion-driven rebels are not necessarily right (on the contrary) and Syria is the victim of, at least, Russia and US. But RT does not care to explain that. Because it’s biased.
- Another false idea that got to me, hence the title, is: „You need to understand Geo-political politics, not saying Russia is innocent, but they’re certainly the lesser of two evils. NATO, US are the profiteers of war” . No, I do not and I cannot agree to that. For me, for most Eastern Europe, Russia is the Empire of Supreme Evil. Not only they enslaved us, not only they robbed us from any and all resources we possessed, not only it parted us from our lands, not only it turned brothers against brothers and killed those who dared speak the truth, not only they provoked hunger that led to cannibalism in Moldova, Ukraine and Caucasus, not only did they kill all of our elites, but they continue to undermine the strength of our East European countries by bribery and corrupt politicians who represent their interests, stealing our future.
So, for me, the so-called Modern Russia is no different, in any fashion, than the Soviet Union, the same way as, for the Balkans, USSR was no different than the Tsarist Empire that preceded it.
Now, Romania is a NATO member for ten years and I don’t see the mighty US killing my people, other than the occasional car accidents killing famous musicians. I do agree, however, that the war in Irak is wrong, US should have never gotten into that, nor should it have dragged other countries into such war, but lets not forget the Saddam Hussein regime was not innocent and it invaded Kuwait in the early 1990s and threatened to do it again in the early 2000s.
However, the decision to attack was made by George Bush Jr. at a time we, in our innocence, did not see him as a an irresponsible, cvasi-literate, Napoleon-wannabe, liar and president. We should have seen this, but we didn’t, because there was no WikiLeaks to speak up th truth and mainstream media everywhere was either lying, or saying half-truths that helped cover everything up.
We’ve grown more prudent, as a result of president’s lying, and you can’t name any other consecutive time we, as NATO, as Europe, followed another US president’s lead, even now, when we should have had, regarding Ukraine.
So yes, we were wrong, we were fooled, once. But that does not make us, or NATO, or Europe, warmongers and, most certainly, profiteers of war and this is the reason most, if not all, Europe pulled out of Irak.
Even the US civil society was fooled into willingly going to war, so they are, just like we – Europe and NATO – are, victims of George Bush’s deceit. Does it make this a warmonger out of US civil society? Or a victim of submission into authority?
So no, dear WikiLeaks, I don’t believe the American people are warmongers. We, in Europe, after two attempts at completely destroying the world, most certainly are not warmongers anymore, this is why we created the European Union – a means to bring together all European countries so that we don’t kill each other, anymore – and OSCE.
And yes, these are not perfect. EU does not work for non-member states, and OSCE is useless, because it was not enforced in a fashion that actually keeps peace, leading to the bloodiest, most savage, most ruthless, most despicable of wars in former Yugoslavia, where ethnic cleansing has reached a height not even the Nazis managed to reach.
People living in apartment blocks were literally killing their other-confession neighbors and peasants living in some village (in Balkans villages maintain roughly the same religion, so two confessions would live in two different villages) went on killing sprees on other-confession’s villages.
So, yes, NATO was right to intervene, to end the mass killings and mass executions.
In Afghanistan, religion-based terrorists overthrown the government, after it requested immediate international assistance. Just as in Yugoslavia, we didn’t intervene, because we would have been called warmongers, in spite of the fact that despicable atrocities were conducted on large scales and that somebody needed to put an end to it.
This is precisely the reason we don’t put an end to the atrocities in Somalia and South Sudan, in spite of the fact that somebody needs to do something about it.
This is also the reason the Arab Spring received no help from us, because someone, somewhere would have said that we are warmongers, in spite of the fact that we had the moral obligation of helping Arab people get the democracy they dies for.
So, yes, we failed them, we failed Afghanistan, we failed Yugoslavia, we failed (South) Sudan, Somalia and a dozen other places that still don’t distinguish themselves from hell…
On the other hand, Russia invaded Eastern Europe, produced the war in Moldova in 1990s (a frozen conflict to this day), produced the wars in Chechnya (first and second) – as despicable and ruthless as the war in Yugoslavia, where most men between 16 and 48 were killed or displaced (and we did not interfere, because Russia is a nuclear power) and that is now a hell-bound place where women commit terrorist attacks against Russian troops…
Russia has attacked Georgia in 2008, for the second time, taking two territories (Abkhazia and South Osetia) and Ukraine in 2014.
Through its military-controlled enclave of Transnistria, taken away from Moldova, Russia provides weaponry to each and every criminal regime in Africa.
So, yes, I dare say Russia is the warmonger here, and if you feel that I may be not quite right, please study more of their „peacekeeping” missions in Budapest and Prague. And it was Russia who shared Europe with Nazi Germany (further reading: The Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact) and the Russian history of aggression goes even further back in time and wider in geography (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Middle East, Africa again).
So, excuse me for not agreeing with you on that Russia is the lesser evil here. It is not. RUSSIA IS THE GREATEST OF EVILS!
As described, Russia has caused us all kinds of pains in the last quarter millennium, ranging from wars, to deportations, to holomodor and a great famine that led to cannibalism that is mostly unknown in the West, to even dismantling the East European states through a series of NKVD (KGB) directives (must read!, Russia still does this to us.) meant to break each and every functional aspect of our countries and even now we’re not fully vindicated from such social dismantling and we honestly don’t expect to get better very soon…
As a matter of fact, it is nothing short of a miracle that our countries survived with such an aggressive Russia neighboring us!
So, please, after you read and comprehend all the materials linked to in this article, come here and tell me how Russia is a smaller menace, a smaller evil than the childish US and tell me how you think a country killing independent journalists is prone to telling the truth.
In the mean time, unless you have a degree on the History of Eastern Europe, please refrain from telling me how great Russia is because, if you have such degree and insist on telling me how great Russia is, you are either a Bolshevik, an useful idiot or simply ill-intended. Or all of them.
